 Limosa lapponica
It’s time to begin your chosen journey. It’s big. Practically impossible. But the starting pistol has been shot, and you’re here to persevere. You’ve got the drive and the spirit to soar, so take off! Fly the most astonishing, mind-blowing voyage of your life!
The Bar-Tailed Godwit holds the record for the longest nonstop migration. It’s the ultimate ultra-endurance event!
In 2007, one of these “marathon migrators” was tracked traveling 7270 miles nonstop for 8 days between New Zealand & Alaska. And of course it was a girl. Girl power! Scientists named her Miranda, after the New Zealand town where they outfitted her with a tracking device. Unlike some birds, the Bar-Tailed Godwit can’t eat on the fly and must flap her wings the entire trip--a fantastic feat beyond comprehension.
There are only an estimated 100,000-150,000 Bar-Tailed Godwits that breed in Alaska, placing them as a High Concern species under the US Shorebird Conservation Plan. To learn more about protecting this champion of migration, visit the Point Reyes Bird Observatory (www.prbo.com).
