pronghorn
Antilocapra americana

It’s so easy for her.
Smiling, confident, graceful.
And all the while--the struggle strengthens; the intensity intensifies.
No big deal for her, though!
She relishes rivalry!
She could go on like this forever!
Then her smile turns to a smirk as she breaks away and triumphs over us all.
What’s with this girl?
How does she do it?
She’s embraced the power and perfection of the pronghorn: the fastest long-distance runner on the planet.

Also known as the pronghorn antelope, this animal athlete is not really an antelope but the only surviving member of a North American family dating back to the Ice Age.  Named for its one-of-a-kind, pronged horn sheath, this unique speedster has a large trachea, heart and lungs--giving it the gift of clocking up to 60 mph.  Even more impressive, though, the pronghorn casually sustains 30 mph for miles at a time.  No animal in the world can challenge this rock-star racer!

The Path of the Pronghorn is a 6000-year-old migration in Wyoming.  It’s over a hundred miles in length but just over a mile in width.  This precious American phenomenon is in jeopardy due to suburban and energy developments, as well as ranching fences.  To learn more about protecting this momentous migration, visit Pronghorn Passage (www.pronghornpassage.com).
